Massachusetts Gaming Commission report reveals first-year impact of sports wagering

A recent report from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission shows that in the state’s first year of mobile and retail sports wagering, $594.9 million in gross gaming revenue was generated, resulting in $118.5 million in tax revenue to support state programs and initiatives.

The Super Bowl alone contributed $9 million to the revenue total, with more than 3 million bets placed on the event.

The MGC’s report showed the industry has created 131 jobs for Massachusetts residents, alongside 3,346 positions for women and 4,492 roles for people from minority groups. The report also highlighted that 38,629 accounts utilized responsible gaming tools to manage their play, while 8,728 used temporary prohibitions.

Retail sports betting launched on January 31, 2023, after Governor Charlie Baker signed the Massachusetts Sports Wagering Act in August 2022. Mobile sports betting didn’t go live until March 10, 2023.

The data in the report spans from January 31, 2023, to March 10, 2024, covering the full year of  retail and online sports betting. BetMGM, Caesars, DraftKings, FanDuel, Penn and WynnBet began their services on March 10, 2023, with Betr and Fanatics launching in May 2023. Betr and WynnBet ceased their Masssachusetts operations in February.
