New York Narrowly Misses $2 Billion In Handle for April

The New York State Gaming Commission reported close to $1.97 billion in sports betting handle for April on Friday, narrowly missing the $2 billion benchmark for the fourth time in history.

The April numbers were boosted to a degree from the revenue collection for the final week of March, which occurred on April 1. That is the start of the fiscal year in New York, and those figures moved into the April ledger. As a result, month-over-month handle increased 6.2% from March — a rarity in the industry — and sports betting revenue rose 20.6% to $184 million.

The handle ranks fourth all-time nationally in the post-PASPA era, and again gives New York a monopoly on the top-10 all-time totals. The revenue total also ranks fourth overall, and the Empire State has eight of the top-10 monthly operator winnings as both New Jersey and Ohio have one apiece.

Handle increased 27.1% compared to April 2023, while the 9.3% hold helped revenue surge 32.1% higher. The $7.57 billion worth of accepted bets through the first four months of 2024 is up 14.4% compared to last year, and the near-9% win rate has generated $679.6 million in revenue — an increase of 21.1%.

The state collected $93.8 million in taxes, with all but $27,220 of that coming from New York’s nine mobile operators. The $345.1 million in receipts this year is $59.6 million ahead of last year’s pace and tracking to exceed $1 billion — double what then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo projected when he pushed for sports betting apps to be available in the Empire State before their eventual arrival in January 2022.

FanDuel avoided its third consecutive month with a sub-10% hold — something that only occurred in the first three months of mobile betting in New York — as it fashioned an 11.7% win rate to collect $91 million in revenue from $780.5 million worth of wagers. That edged the digital powerhouse above $1.8 billion in total revenue in the Empire State.

DraftKings had a 42.7% year-over-year increase in handle to $737 million, and an 8.6% hold resulted in a windfall of $63.2 million for April. It was the fourth time DraftKings topped $60 million in monthly revenue, all in the past eight months.

The $158.8 million of accepted bets by Caesars represented 8.1% of the $1.96 billion in total mobile handle, an all-time low in terms of market share. It did clear $400 million in total revenue after claiming $10.4 million in April, but the 5.6% win rate was nearly 3.4 percentage points lower compared to March.

BetMGM‘s handle of $130.2 million was its most since totaling $142.2 million in April 2022 and ranked fourth overall. It had a 7% hold in reaping $9.1 million in revenue, which also was fourth-best in 28 months in the marketplace.

Fanatics Sportsbook‘s first full month as an operator in New York was largely positive with $5.6 million in revenue — an all-time high when including predecessor PointsBet as it notched a 7.5% hold. It also attained a 3% mobile handle market share for the first time since February 2022 with $74.1 million in accepted wagers for April.

BetRivers‘ month-over-month totals from March moved little in both categories — its $67.1 million handle was up close to $1 million, while the $3.3 million in revenue was down $81,400, resulting in a 4.9% win rate.

The NYSGC also released its weekly figures for the nine mobile operators, who combined for $484.1 million worth of wagers for the week ending May 5. That figure was enough to crack the bottom of the Top 10 all-time out of 122 weeks of reporting.

DraftKings paced the group of nine with its second-highest week of action, totaling $217.2 million in handle. But it failed to put up a large corresponding revenue haul as the public limited it to a 3.2% hold and $7 million in winnings. That was less than half the $18.1 million claimed the week ending Dec. 17 when it accepted $218.1 million in wagers.

FanDuel accounted for more than half the $23.1 million in operator winnings for the week with $12.6 million, though it had a modest 7.5% win rate from $168.3 million in handle. FanDuel and Resorts World were the only mobile books to top a 7% hold for the week, while bettors came out $33,563 ahead against Bally Bet in sending it to a minus-2% hold on $1.7 million in wagers.

The $18.1 million handle reported by Fanatics lifted the overall total above $1 billion when including PointsBet’s numbers. It became the sixth licensee to reach that benchmark while the three operators yet to do so — Bally Bet, outgoing WynnBET, and Resorts World — have combined for $394.3 million worth of wagers accepted.
