Temple-UAB Basketball Game Draws Attention For Unusual Betting Activity

Unusual sports betting activity related to a Temple and University of Alabama-Birmingham men’s basketball game “might be looked into deeper” by industry watchdog U.S. Integrity, the company’s CEO, Matt Holt, confirmed with Sports Handle.

The two college teams are AAC members, and the AAC is a client of U.S. Integrity. The conference confirmed with Sports Illustrated that the game was flagged for unusual wagering activity by U.S. Integrity.

UAB opened as a 2.5-point favorite for the Thursday night game, but the line closed at -7.5 across several betting apps. Temple appeared to play the game without any meaningful player absences.

“That doesn’t happen in March without injury or suspension,” Rex Beyers, the former US Head of Wagering at PlayUp, told Sports Handle of the drastic line movement.

The Blazers easily covered the closing spread, winning the nationally televised game 100-72. It’s the first time all season UAB scored 100 points in a game, and it’s the first time Temple allowed 100 points in a game.

Sports Handle’s requests for comment sent to several sports betting operators and Temple were not immediately returned.

This isn’t the first time in the last 12 months that a college sporting event has been flagged for suspicious betting activity. U.S. Integrity flagged suspicious wagering activity related to an LSU-Alabama baseball game in April of 2023, which ultimately led to the finding that Alabama coach Brad Bohannon was sharing inside information with an Ohio sports bettor. Bohannon lost his job shortly following the game being flagged.
