Famed Hollywood actor Carl Weathers passed away Thursday at the age of 76. His family released a statement saying the Rocky star died peacefully in his sleep.
Weathers was recently part of an advertising campaign for FanDuel, “coaching” Rob Gronkowski is his attempt to hit a field goal as part of this year’s “Kick of Destiny” Super Bowl promotion.
“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Carl Weathers,” his family said, according to People magazine. “Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life. Through his contributions to film, television, the arts and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend.”
Weathers rose to fame playing Apollo Creed in the Rocky franchise, and went on star in Predator, Happy Gilmore, and dozens of other films. He also had a starring role in The Mandalorian and portrayed an ultra-frugal version of himself in the TV comedy Arrested Development.
In FanDuel’s promotion, Gronkowski — who missed his 25-yard attempt during last year’s Super Bowl — was coming back from self-imposed exile when Weathers, driving a motorcycle, found him in the desert and promised to train him.
