A groundbreaking study in Australia by a scholar at the Federation University and the Victorian Coroner’s Court has revealed that at least 4 percent of the state’s suicides between 2009 and 2016 were linked to problem gambling.

As reported by ABC, the figure is actually believed to be much higher given that victims tend not to express their gambling habits.

In order to combat Australia’s gambling harm problem, state and national authorities have launched various campaigns, including daily casino closure periods, limiting advertising, pokie spend and play time, mandatory cashless play and a national self-exclusion register for online gambling.

The state of Victoria, by year-end is set to have the strictest anti-gambling regulations amongst Australian states.
