Maryland September Sports Betting Breaks Record
Share This TagsThe sports betting industry in Maryland has reached a new milestone, as the state reported a record-breaking $532 million in wagers placed during the month of September. The achievement was helped as the NFL season kicked off, fuelling a surge in betting activity and generating significant tax revenue for the state.
According to the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Director, John Martin, September marked the largest month ever in the state’s nearly three-year history of sports wagering. The $532 million in total wagers represents an increase compared to the $3.2 million figure recorded in September 2023, translating to more than $9.3 million in tax revenue for the state – nearly triple the previous year’s amount.
One of the key factors contributing to this sports betting boom is the surging popularity of the Washington Commanders, the local NFL team. Director Martin acknowledged that the team’s improved performance and the enthusiasm of its fanbase have played a significant role in driving the increased betting activity.
The previous record for Maryland’s sports betting industry was set in January 2024, when the state generated $8.2 million in tax revenue. The September figures, however, have shattered this milestone, underscoring the continued growth and momentum within the industry.
The expansion of betting options in Maryland has also contributed to the surge in sports wagering. Bettors now have access to a wider range of sports and events, including professional leagues, college sports, and even international competitions, providing them with more opportunities to place their wagers.
