Labour Day sees sharp rise in Macau hotel occupancy rate

This year’s Labour Day holiday has seen Macau’s hotel occupancy rates rise to a high 80-90% without the need for discounts.

This is at least a 19% increase compared to last year’s rates, in reference to the data from the Macao Government Tourism Office.

According to the Public Security Forces of Macau, a total of circa 3 million individuals entered and exited Macau during the recent five-day Golden Week holiday period, with 41% identified as tourists.

Among them, inbound tourist numbers reached 604,000, marking a significant increase of 22.5% compared to the same period last year.

As visitor numbers surged, so did gambling revenue, surpassing market expectations. According to the DICJ, Macau’s April gaming revenue totaled MOP 18.545bn (US$2.3bn), reflecting a 26% year-on-year increase.

Quoted from a Chinese news article on rFI, Mr. Ma Haowen, Vice Chairman of Success Universe Group, the operator of the "Ponte 16" casino project in Macau, expressed satisfaction with its hotel occupancy rates exceeding 90%.

He also anticipates that May's gambling revenue has a strong chance of challenging the MOP 20 billion mark, setting a new post-pandemic high.

Additionally, with China recently announcing eased visa measures for travel to Hong Kong and Macau, it is believed this will have a positive impact on Macau's gambling revenue.
