Spelinspektionen releases new measures on match-fixing and illegal operations

Spelinspektionen, the Swedish Gambling Authority, has launched two new initiatives to strengthen integrity in the industry.

Match-fixing

The Spelinspektionen held a press conference alongside the Swedish Government, as the two parties discussed the new measures being introduced to detect and combat match-fixing.

As part of this, sports federations, operators and Spelinspektionen will share information with one another as they build cases on suspected activity.

Minister for Financial Markets, Niklas Wykman, said: "Match-fixing feeds the gangs at the same time as youth sports, among other things, are damaged.

“Athletes should not be pawns in the activities of organised crime. To combat crime and protect sport, it is important to stop match-fixing."

According to their reports, match-fixing is in an “expansive phase” and gaining momentum.

Spelinspektionen Director General Camilla Rosenberg explained that the Authority will develop a platform where organisations can share any information related to match-fixing cases.

Illegal gambling operations

The Swedish Government has commissioned both the Spelinspektionen and the Finansinspektionen to collaborate on several tasks.

This will focus on how to counteract illegal gambling activities in the Swedish gambling market, and to prevent money laundering.

The respective authorities will be asked to figure out how they can use payment providers and the act of blocking them, to prevent illegal operations.

This is something they achieved in late March, when banning three operators from targeting Swedish consumers.
