In a recent incident that has caught the attention of the gaming industry, a pair of savvy scammers managed to swindle a French casino out of a staggering £200,000 using a meticulously planned and highly sophisticated scheme.
The two individuals at the centre of this elaborate heist were a 37-year-old Lithuanian and a 63-year-old Ukrainian, both seasoned gamblers with a penchant for pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. Authorities believe they were part of a larger criminal gang that had successfully executed similar feats at casinos across Europe, honing their skills and perfecting their techniques over time.
The scammers’ modus operandi was nothing short of ingenious. They had managed to conceal miniature cameras on their persons, with one lens hidden on a smartphone and the other discreetly taped underneath their clothing. As the cards were dealt at the poker table, these cameras captured low-angle images of each card, which were then instantly relayed to an accomplice outside the casino.
This accomplice, whose identity remains unknown, quickly analyzed the card information and relayed instructions back to the players through a nearly invisible earpiece. This real-time communication allowed the duo to make informed decisions and capitalize on the knowledge of their opponents’ cards, giving them a significant advantage at the tables.
The effectiveness of this scheme was undeniable, as the scammers were able to amass a staggering £200,000 in winnings from the Enghien-les-Bains casino in a single night. Investigators believe this was just the tip of the iceberg, with the gang having likely pulled off similar feats at multiple establishments across Europe.
The daring duo’s luck finally ran out when they were apprehended by French authorities in the Val-d’Oise region, just north of Paris, on the night of July 28th. Police had been tipped off about their activities in June and had been closely monitoring their movements, observing them rotating between poker and blackjack tables before making the arrest.
