Pennsylvania’s sports betting operators collectively achieved a 48.4% year-over-year increase in gross gaming revenue during the month of August.

The performance was fuelled by a 23.5% year-over-year increase in the total handle, which reached $485.3 million. This translated into a combined revenue of $45.4 million for the state’s online and retail sportsbooks, nearly half a million dollars more than the previous August.

The strong performance was further bolstered by an impressive hold rate of 9.4%, a figure that represented a year-over-year increase of over 1.5 percentage points. While this was down slightly from the previous month’s hold of 12.7%.

The online sports betting segment continued to lead the charge, accounting for a staggering $457.6 million of the total handle. Mobile operators, in turn, hauled in $41 million in revenue, buoyed by a robust 9% hold. Retail sportsbooks, meanwhile, held their own, posting a 16% win rate that generated $4.5 million in revenue from a handle of $27.7 million.

The state’s coffers were also the beneficiaries of this sports betting boom, with the Keystone State collecting $10.2 million in tax revenue – nearly $3 million more than the previous year’s haul.

Within the crowded field of Pennsylvania’s sportsbook operators, FanDuel emerged as the clear leader, with a handle of $175.3 million – a 22% increase from the previous month. While the operator’s revenue of $18.2 million fell 22.2% month-over-month.

Trailing FanDuel, DraftKings and BetMGM also maintained their strong footing in the Pennsylvania sports betting market. DraftKings reported a handle of $123.1 million, while BetMGM finished third with a handle of $34.3 million.

One of the most intriguing developments in the Pennsylvania sports betting landscape was the impressive debut of bet365, which launched in late July. In its first full month of operation, the online sportsbook managed to secure the fourth-highest handle in the state, raking in $28.1 million and generating $2 million in gross revenue.

The performances of bet365 and Fanatics Sportsbook led to a slight reshuffling of the state’s sportsbook pecking order, with ESPN BET slipping down the rankings despite surpassing $20 million in wagers for the month. Caesars, meanwhile, fell short of that milestone, recording a handle of $17.9 million.

Sports betting was not the only bright spot in Pennsylvania’s gaming landscape, the state’s total gaming revenue for August reached $510.17 million, representing an 11.6% year-over-year increase.

The online casino sector continued to thrive, generating $183.7 million in revenue – a significant increase from the $145 million produced in August 2023, though a slight dip from the previous month’s $207.7 million. Despite this slight decline, iGaming operators still managed to pay out nearly $82 million in taxes to the state.
