UK General Election Latest Odds & The Future For UK Gambling Industry

Today in general election day in the UK and the party with the most seats will take power, at present the current government party, the Conservatives’ current odds of 150-1 to gain the most seats reflect the significant erosion of public confidence in their ability to govern effectively after 14 years in power.

The decision by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to call a surprise summer general election appears to have backfired, with the Conservative campaign lurching from one crisis to the next. Sunak’s leadership has been scrutinized, and his party’s poor polling performance has led to little improvement if any in the polls.

The latest projections suggest that the Conservatives are likely to fare poorly in the election, with the most favourable market odds being 50 to 99 seats at 5-4 and 100 to 149 seats at 15-8. These numbers stand in stark contrast to their performance in the 2019 election, where they won 365 seats.

In contrast to the Conservatives’ woes, the Labour Party has emerged as the frontrunner in the race. With odds of 1-66 to gain the most seats and 1-33 to win an overall majority, Keir Starmer’s party is poised for victory, but the questions on how they view the gambling industry in the UK are not clear and concerns will remain for some time until Labour show a direction.

The latest projections suggest that Labour could more than double their current seat tally of 205, with odds of 3-10 to gain over 418.5 seats. The party is also favoured to have between 450 and 499 seats, with odds of 5-4.

The market’s confidence in Labour’s performance is further reflected in the odds of 1-33 for the party to win an overall majority. This suggests that a Labour landslide victory is a distinct possibility, with the potential to reshape the political landscape in the UK, that is worrying for many as a powerful Labour government will feel they have the mandate to do what they want.

There are some 12 hours until voting closes and the winner is expected to be confirmed around 7am on Friday morning, what that means for the gambling industry in terms of regulation and tax is to be seen, but it does appear that the Labour Party will be the government the industry in the UK will be working with.
