Macau’s casino gross gaming revenue (GGR) for the calendar year reached MOP183.06 billion (US$22.75 billion), this marked a 333.8 percent increase compared to the previous year.

In January 2023, Macau lifted the travel and Covid-19-related restrictions that had been in place throughout 2022. This decision proved to be a turning point for the casino industry, leading to a surge in revenue. The Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau, also known as DICJ, disclosed that Macau’s annual 2023 revenue performance reached MOP183.06 billion. This remarkable achievement demonstrates the resilience and adaptability of Macau’s casino operators in the face of adversity.

The year 2023 concluded on a high note, with December GGR reaching MOP18.57 billion. This figure represented a significant increase of 15.8 percent compared to the previous month’s tally. The strong finish in December further solidified Macau’s position as a premier destination for gambling enthusiasts worldwide.

While the fourth-quarter data on the relative contribution to Macau GGR from the VIP segment versus the mass segment is not yet available, it is anticipated to reveal interesting insights. The VIP segment typically comprises high-rollers and wealthy individuals, while the mass segment caters to a broader audience. Understanding the contribution from each segment is crucial for evaluating the overall health and sustainability of Macau’s casino industry.

As Macau’s city-wide casino GGR for full-year 2023 exceeded MOP180 billion, the six casino operators in the region are now obligated to increase their pledged non-gaming spending by 20 percent. This requirement stems from the 10-year concession contracts with the city’s government that came into effect in January 2023. If Macau’s annual GGR reached or exceeded the MOP180 billion mark by 2027, the casino firms would need to increase their collective MOP108.7 billion non-gaming and overseas-marketing spending pledges for the 2023 to 2032 period.

With the remarkable revenue performance in 2023, Macau’s casino industry is poised for continued growth and success. The lifting of travel and Covid-19-related restrictions has revitalized the sector, attracting both local and international visitors. As Macau continues to position itself as a global gambling hub, the casino operators will play a vital role in driving innovation, enhancing customer experiences, and expanding their non-gaming offerings.
