Ireland Calls For New Gambling Legislation

A recent study into problem gambling in Ireland has reached concerning levels according to the report, leading to an urgent call for changes in legislation and increased accountability within the industry.

Recent research shows that approximately 3.3% of the Irish population, around 130,000 people, meet the criteria for problem gambling. Alarmingly, an additional 279,000 adults exhibit moderate signs of this addiction, indicating a significant involvement of the gambling industry with customers facing gambling-related problems.

Professor Colin O’Gara says there is an urgent need for the industry to contribute meaningfully through a state levy that can effectively address the problem at hand.

The current gambling laws in Ireland are outdated and do not offer sufficient protection says O’Gara. Minister of State James Browne is leading efforts for new legislation that addresses the negative consequences associated with problem gambling. The proposed laws would give extensive powers to the country’s first gambling regulator, enabling more effective oversight.

Minister Browne acknowledges the seriousness of problem gambling and its devastating impact on individuals and families. Professor O’Gara calls for funding in every county to establish inpatient treatment facilities for those affected. Urgent action is needed to establish a social fund to support problem gambling initiatives and ensure enough resources for treatment and support services.

Although the research sheds light on the problem, it is believed that the estimates may still underestimate the true prevalence of problem gambling in Ireland. Nevertheless, the data is timely as the gambling regulator begins its work to effectively address this pressing issue.

The research paper has significant implications for understanding the role of gambling in Irish society. It highlights the magnitude of the problem and the urgent need for action. Problem gambling affects people from all walks of life, making it a pressing public health emergency that the gambling industry must responsibly tackle.
