Under current New Zealand law, TAB NZ (Track Racing and Betting New Zealand) is prohibited from providing online casino gambling services due to its statutory body status. Despite this, TAB still wants the government to amend the relevant laws so that it can participate in New Zealand's upcoming online casino market.

TAB files request to amend law

According to RNZ, the TAB submitted a proposal worth NZ$150 million (approximately US$87.2 million) to apply for one of New Zealand’s upcoming online casino licenses. However, the New Zealand government did not accept the TAB’s request to amend the law.

Government stance

Minister of Home Affairs Brooke van Velden made it clear that the government does not support involvement in online casino gambling. He pointed out that the government should focus on providing core services that people need, rather than getting involved in the gambling field. Horse Racing Minister Winston Peters also expressed opposition to the amendment of the law.

TAB pushes for bill review

Despite the Government's rejection of TAB's proposal, TAB said it would continue to push for a legislative review, noting that more and more young New Zealanders (aged 18 to 35) were choosing overseas online bookmakers over local TAB.

Foreign investment and compliance issues

A Home Affairs briefing last year warned that giving TAB an online casino monopoly could be challenged because of its partnership with London-based Entain, which has a 25-year deal and could see most profits flow offshore. It also cited Entain's compliance issues in Australia.

Future Outlook

New Zealand is expected to launch its online casino licensing system in early 2026. Under the new regulations, the minimum age for online casinos will be 18, and license holders can only offer casino games and cannot involve sports betting or lottery products.

in conclusion

The New Zealand government is currently cautious about online casino gambling services, especially when it comes to foreign investment and legal compliance issues. Although TAB hopes to capture market share through legal changes, its proposal has not received government support and may still face legal review and policy adjustments in the future.
