Super Group’s latest financial update on its revenue forecasts, says that the company expects a stronger than anticipated performance in the latter part of 2024.
The most notable change in Super Group’s financial outlook is the upward revision of its revenue guidance for 2024. Initially set at €1.55 billion, the company has now raised this figure to €1.6 billion.
Alongside the revenue guidance increase, Super Group has also revised its projections for Adjusted EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization) excluding U.S. operations. The company has raised this figure from €345 million to €360 million, representing a significant boost in anticipated profitability.
Neal Menashe, the CEO of Super Group, said on the announcement: “I’m very proud of our performance this year and delighted we are in a position to raise our full-year revenue and ex-U.S. Adjusted EBITDA guidance again while announcing another dividend for 2024. We have consistently said that we will consider returning excess cash to shareholders, and the outstanding performance of the business throughout 2024 alongside the continued strength of our balance sheet, has given us the platform to be able to do this. It has been a super year for Super Group and we look forward to building on this success as we move into 2025.”
Q1 2024: Challenges in the U.S. Market
The beginning of 2024 presented significant challenges for Super Group, particularly in its U.S. operations:
- North American Segment Losses: In Q1, Super Group reported that its North American segment lost $21.7 million.
- Revenue Decline: The company experienced a 13% year-on-year decrease in revenues during this period.
- Massachusetts Launch Cancellation: Super Group decided not to renew its license in Massachusetts and initiated an internal review of its U.S. operations.
These challenges led to a strategic reassessment of Super Group’s presence in the U.S. market.
Mid-2024: Strategic Pivot and U.S. Market Exit
In response to the difficulties faced in the U.S. market, Super Group made a significant strategic decision:
- Betway Sportsbook Closure: In July 2024, Super Group announced the closure of Betway Sportsbook operations in eight U.S. states: Arizona, Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, New Jersey, Ohio, and Virginia.
- Profitability Concerns: The decision was primarily driven by concerns about the profitability of U.S. operations.
- Partnership Impact: The exit from the U.S. market affected various partnerships Betway had established with U.S. sports teams and leagues, including the NHL and several NBA teams.
Q2 2024: Signs of Recovery
Despite the challenges in the U.S. market, Super Group showed signs of a strong recovery in the second quarter of 2024:
- Record Revenue: The company achieved a record €414 million in revenue, representing a 9% year-on-year increase.
- Record Adjusted EBITDA: Super Group reported a record Adjusted EBITDA of €98 million, an 11% year-on-year increase with a 24% margin.
- CEO Commentary: Neal Menashe described Q2 2024 as the company’s “strongest quarter ever,” highlighting the progress made in optimizing Super Group’s global footprint.
This turnaround in Q2 set the stage for the continued strong performance that has led to the revised guidance for the full year 2024.
