Sports Betting In Ohio Hits $900 Million Handle For October

Ohio’s sports betting market has been on an upward trajectory since its launch in January 2023, and October’s performance further solidifies this trend. The total handle for the month reached $901.4 million, marking a 20.6% increase compared to the same period last year.
The October handle not only surpassed the previous year’s figures but also showed a month-over-month improvement. Compared to September’s $863 million, October’s handle represented a 4.5% increase, indicating sustained growth in the market.
While October’s handle is undoubtedly impressive, it’s worth noting that it falls short of the all-time record set in January 2023, when the market launched with a staggering $1.11 billion in wagers.
Online Betting Dominates the Landscape
One of the key factors contributing to Ohio’s sports betting success is the overwhelming popularity of online wagering. The Ohio Casino Control Commission’s data reveals that online betting accounted for the lion’s share of October’s handle, with $881.7 million wagered through digital platforms.
In contrast, retail sports betting, while still significant, pales in comparison to its online counterpart. Brick-and-mortar sportsbooks generated a handle of $19.7 million in October. While this figure is not insignificant, it highlights the clear preference among bettors for digital platforms.
