Genting Resorts World Bimini Sued For $600 Million

Genting Malaysia Bhd, the Malaysian conglomerate, is facing a major legal challenge as its US subsidiary, Genting Americas Inc. (GAI), has been slapped with a $600 million lawsuit by one of its stakeholders in the Bahamas resort operations. The lawsuit, filed by RAV Bahamas Ltd., alleges wrongdoing and fraud, casting a cloud over Genting’s international expansion efforts.

Genting Malaysia, through its subsidiary GAI, has been operating the Resorts World Bimini (RW Bimini) in the Bahamas. The resort is owned and operated by BB Entertainment Ltd. (BBE), in which Genting holds a 78% indirect interest, while RAV Bahamas Ltd. retains the remaining 22% stake.

On October 7th, 2022, RAV Bahamas Ltd. filed a lawsuit against GAI in the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida. The lawsuit demands damages exceeding $600 million (RM2.6 billion), alleging various wrongdoings and fraudulent activities related to the operations of the RW Bimini resort.

GAI, the Genting subsidiary named in the lawsuit, has maintained that the claims made by RAV Bahamas Ltd. are unfounded and lack merit. The company has stated that it will vigorously defend itself against the allegations.

The $600 million lawsuit poses a significant financial and reputational risk for Genting. If the allegations are proven valid, the company could face substantial financial penalties, which could impact its overall financial performance and investor confidence.
