The departure of the once-dominant GambetDC and the arrival of industry powerhouses like FanDuel have catalyzed a seismic shift in the D.C. sports betting market. GambetDC, the initial online sportsbook in the District, struggled to meet the lofty expectations set by city officials, falling well short of its projected $84 million in tax revenue over its first four years. This underwhelming performance prompted the D.C. City Council to take decisive action, amending the regulations to allow for the entry of multiple online sportsbooks.

The introduction of FanDuel as the new subcontractor for the Office of Lottery and Gaming (OLG) has been a game-changer. In just over 30% of the time that GambetDC was operational, FanDuel managed to outperform its predecessor in both handle and revenue. The company’s handle increased by a remarkable 56%, while its revenue skyrocketed by an impressive 134%. This rapid ascent has set the stage for a new era of prosperity in the District’s sports betting landscape.

The amendment to the regulations has opened the doors for multiple online sportsbooks to enter the D.C. market, further diversifying the options available to bettors. Operators such as Caesars, BetMGM, and DraftKings have all established a presence in the nation’s capital.

The year-over-year comparisons for July and August 2024 showcase the remarkable transformation that has taken place in the D.C. sports betting market. With the introduction of the new sportsbooks, the market has experienced staggering increases in both handle and revenue. In July, the handle and revenue grew by 804% and 728%, respectively, compared to the same period in the previous year. Even in August, when the initial surge had subsided, the market still recorded a 400% increase in handle and a 48.4% rise in revenue.

The performance of the D.C. sports betting market has been further underscored by the setting of new monthly records. In August 2024, the total handle reached a new high of $40.58 million, surpassing the previous record of $36.34 million set in May. The total revenue generated in August, at $4.54 million, was the second-highest on record, trailing only the $5.63 million recorded in May.
