Nebraska online sports betting measure advances out of committee; could lead to referendum

Nebraska lawmakers on Monday advanced a proposed constitutional amendment allowing a future Legislature to legalize online sports betting in the Cornhusker state.

The General Affairs Committee advanced an amended version of Lincoln Sen. Eliot Bostar’s proposal (LR3CA) on a 5-2 vote on Day 10 of a special legislative session called by Gov. Jim Pillen to address property tax reform.

As part of wide-ranging efforts to drive new revenues to reduce property tax bills, Bostar introduced LR3CA and a companion bill (LB13) that would legalize online sports betting through a vote of the people this November.

Wagers would have been taxed at 20% under Bostar’s plan, an amount backers estimate could generate $32 million in new revenue to the state, with 90% of the proceeds being funneled into the Property Tax Credit Cash Fund.
