What’s On Tap: Wimbledon, Euro 2024 Finals, And Bronny At NBA Summer League

Each week, our “What’s on Tap” series previews the week ahead in the world of sports betting. Come here for a summary of upcoming financial happenings, legislative and regulatory meetings, industry conferences, top games scheduled for the week, and much more.

Spain prevailed over Germany in the Euro 2024 quarterfinals when Mikel Merino went airborne for the decisive goal in the 119th minute. The header lifted Spain to a semifinal matchup against another heavyweight: France, the 2018 World Cup champion. France star Kylian Mbappe left a win over Portugal early after being hit in the face. Spain has moneyline odds of +165 to win in regulation at ESPN BET.

In the other semi, England will face the Netherlands on Wednesday. As with France, England advanced to the Final Four with a victory in penalty kicks. England is a +160 moneyline favorite over the Dutch; the total is 2.5 goals. On the futures market, Spain (+200) is the favorite at bet365. They are followed by England and France at +250 and +275 respectively.

A bevy of top seeds fell at Wimbledon over the weekend, which has created an unexpected quarterfinals at the year’s third major. American Emma Navarro earned a breakthrough victory on Sunday in a straight-set win over No. 2 Coco Gauff. Navarro converted on three of four break chances and won 59% of points on her second serve in the victory.

If Navarro maintains a calm demeanor over the remainder of the fortnight, she could be difficult to beat at Wimbledon. Navarro will face Jasmine Paolini in Tuesday’s quarterfinal. On the futures market, Navarro is the second choice at FanDuel, with +380 odds. Elena Rybakina, the 2022 champion, is the heavy favorite at +105. Besides Gauff, top seed Iga Swiatek and defending champion Marketa Vondrousova lost over the weekend.

A host of gambling industry stakeholders will converge in Louisville for the All-American Sports Betting Summit. The three-day conference will feature panels on responsible gambling, anti-money laundering enforcement, fixed odds wagering, and A.I. innovations, among others. One panel on Friday will delve into whether the sports betting industry will adopt FINRA regulations that are applicable in the finance world.

Uruguay ousted Brazil on Saturday in a thrilling penalty-kick shootout. Through four games at Copa America, Uruguay has surrendered only one goal. On Wednesday, the Uruguay back line will be tested by a Colombia squad which scored five times in Saturday’s win over Panama. Colombia has moneyline odds of +175; the total is 2.5 goals.

The winner will face either Argentina or Canada in Sunday’s final. Argentina remains a decisive favorite to repeat as Copa America champions. As of Monday morning, Argentina had odds of -125 to take home the trophy. Uruguay is next at +275, followed by Colombia at +350.

Saratoga Race Course will open its gates on Thursday for the nation’s most prestigious horse racing meet. This year represents a bit of an anomaly as Saratoga already hosted the four-day Belmont Stakes Festival last month. The track will host the Belmont next year, as well, while Belmont Park undergoes a comprehensive facelift.

One of the biggest questions leading into the meet is whether Thorpedo Anna will take on the boys in the Grade 1 Travers Stakes. Thorpedo Anna, a three-year-old filly, romped on the same track in last month’s Acorn. It is also unclear if National Treasure will return to Saratoga for The Whitney. National Treasure, the winner of the Met Mile at Saratoga, has emerged as one of the nation’s top older horses.

While Bronny James sat out Sunday in the California Classic, he is expected to return this week when the Lakers arrive in Las Vegas for the NBA Summer League. James, the son of NBA career-scoring leader LeBron James, missed Sunday night’s game in San Francisco with knee soreness. However, Bronny should be back in time for Friday’s opener against the Rockets, ESPN reported.

The annual NBA Summer League, an event that features all 30 NBA franchises, will take place from July 12-22. Prior to Friday’s tip-off, the California Classic and the Salt Lake City Summer League will conclude this week. James scored four points on Saturday in the Lakers’ opener of the California Classic. James has odds of 250/1 at BetMGM to win NBA Rookie of the Year.

Unlike the women’s side, the men’s draw at Wimbledon has mostly remained intact over the first week. The top-four seeds advanced to the fourth round, including defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and top seed Jannik Sinner. If form holds, Alcaraz will face Sinner, and Novak Djokovic will take on Alexander Zverev in the semifinals.

If Alcaraz meets Djokovic on Sunday, it will be a rematch of last year’s epic five-set final. Alcaraz defeated Djokovic to win Wimbledon for the first time in his career. Sinner has odds of +165 to win the title, followed by Alcaraz and Djokovic at +250 and +390, respectively. In search of his first major, Zverev has odds of +850.
