Canadian Football League doesn’t want federal regulations on betting ads: report

The Canadian Football League does not want the federal government regulating sports betting ads, according to a report.

In a letter to the Senate transport and communications committee obtained by Blacklock’s Reporter, CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie said Parliament should allow leagues and other professional sports organizations to regulate gambling advertisements on their own.

“We do not agree a national framework is required to regulate the advertising of sports betting in Canada,” Ambrosie wrote.

Bill S-269, which would set limits on sports betting advertising and national standards for preventing problem gambling, has passed second reading in the Senate. The bill, if it becomes law, would ban endorsements by “celebrities and athletes in the promotion of sports betting.”
