Poll: Missouri Voters Split On Topic Of Sports Betting Legalization

Missouri voters are split on sports betting legalization, according to a recent survey conducted by The Emerson College Polling/The Hill.

The survey, which received responses from 1,000 Missouri voters from June 17-19, found that 38.3% supported legalizing sports betting. Another 35.4% were against legalizing sports wagering, while the remaining portion (26.3%) were unsure of their thoughts on legal sports betting in the Show Me State.

Winning for Missouri Education, an effort to legalize sports betting in Missouri spearheaded by the state’s professional sports franchises, is working toward getting the question of legal sports betting on the November ballot.

A few other polls often cited by Winning for Missouri Education suggest far greater than 38% of Missouri voters favor legalizing sports wagering. A February poll of about 900 likely voters conducted by St. Louis University and YouGov found that 60% of responders support legalizing sports betting.

On the other hand, however, a widely circulated Missouri Scout poll conducted by the Remington Research Group in May found that just over 60% of respondents were against legalizing sports wagering.

The June Emerson poll falls in between those extremes, although the varying degrees of polling results add little clarity to how a November vote might go. Sports betting stakeholders will likely need a continued push through November to ensure positive election results, should the issue officially be placed on the ballot.
