Lawyers For Iowa State Athletes File Motion To Suppress Gambling Probe Evidence

A legal motion filed on behalf of four current and former Iowa State athletes seeks to suppress information related to a sports betting investigation of the athletes.

The athletes — wrestler Paniro Johnson and former football players Eyioma Uwazurike, Isaiah Lee, Jirehl Brock — were all previously charged with tampering with records related to an investigation into their sports gambling habits.

The lawyers who submitted the motion allege the investigation was conducted unlawfully by Iowa’s Division of Criminal Investigation. They argue that evidence obtained using geofencing technology occurred without a search warrant, and that investigators misled the athletes to believe their cooperation would lead to punishments for operators of betting apps rather than the individuals.

Additionally, the attorneys allege that geofencing company GeoComply disabled DCI’s access to one of its tools (Kibana) last month as a result of the investigation potentially overstepping its allowed scope.

The DCI has previously denied suggestions that its investigation was conducted unlawfully.
