Record December Caps A Record Year For Pennsylvania Gaming Revenue

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board Thursday released its 2023 revenue report, which revealed a 27.7% increase in online gaming revenue compared to 2022. The $5.7 billion in combined annual revenue is a record high for the state, which offers casino apps, fantasy sports contests, online poker, and sports betting, as well as video gaming terminals.

December capped the record-breaking year with all-time highs of its own for overall gaming revenue and online casino revenue, according to the monthly report. According to the PGCB, annual revenue was 9.3% higher than in 2022, and the state took in a total of $2.3 billion in tax revenue for 2023.

For December 2023, Pennsylvania gaming entities set a revenue record, taking in $534 million in revenue. This broke the previous record of $515.3 million set in March 2023. Those numbers include traditional and iCasino, in-person and digital sports betting, fantasy sports contests, and online poker.

Online casinos took in $165 million, according to the PCGB press release. The next closest revenue month was September 2023, when casinos brought in $159 million in revenue. Sports wagering accounted for a record-breaking $72.5 million in revenue as compared to $63.7 million in November 2021. December 2023 was the first month that PENN Entertainment’s ESPN BET platform was live in the state.

The state collected just under $218 million in tax revenue for all forms of gaming.

Compared to December 2022, digital sports betting and online slots showed significant growth. According to the report, online wagering grew by 32.7% and online slots grew by 27.6%. Revenue from fantasy contests slipped by 11% and online poker revenue dipped by 8.7%.

A look at Pennsylvania’s annual leaders

The PGCB reports revenue by casino rather than operator, and for the year, Parx Casino led all retail locations in slot revenue ($386 million), Wind Creek Bethlehem led all competitors in table-game revenue ($241 million), and PENN Entertainment’s Hollywood Casino was the top revenue-producing online casino ($712 million). Hollywood Casino’s 2023 revenue was 26.9% higher than in 2022.

Marquee by PENN brought in the most annual VGT revenue at $24.9 million, while DraftKings was the top-grossing fantasy provider with $13.9 million in sales. Of note, Underdog Fantasy brought in $801,894, a 51.4% increase from 2022.
