What’s On Tap: NFL Wild Card Round, CFP National Title, And CES 2024

Jim Harbaugh has had a tumultuous season. Suspended twice during the campaign, Harbaugh missed critical wins over the Wolverines’ main rivals in Ohio State and Penn State. Nevertheless, Michigan has gone 14-0, with 11 of those wins coming by double digits. Michigan can cap an undefeated season with a win over Washington (also 14-0) in Monday’s national title game.

When the teams met in 2021, Blake Corum rushed for 171 yards and three touchdowns in Michigan’s 31-10 victory. Neither of the two biggest offensive stars on this year’s Huskies squad, quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and wideout Rome Odunze, played in that game.

Penix, the Heisman Trophy runner-up, passed for 430 yards and two touchdowns in a semifinal victory over Texas. Odunze, a likely NFL first-round pick, hauled in six receptions for 125 yards against the Longhorns. Penix defeated Michigan in 2020 before transferring from Indiana, his only prior matchup against the Wolverines. In that game, Penix went 30-for-50 for 342 yards in a 38-21 win.

The Wolverines are 4.5-point favorites at DraftKings; the total is 56.5. If you expect a shootout in Houston, the following same-game parlay at DraftKings would pay +420.

Each January, leading technology executives converge in Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show, the world’s largest annual tech conference. In the past, CEOs from DraftKings, FanDuel, and other top betting app operators have lent insights on the upcoming year at the popular conference.

On Tuesday, DraftKings’ senior vice president of growth, Michael Hermalyn, will moderate a panel on the future of sports betting at the Aria Resort and Casino. The panel will address how technology has impacted the in-game betting experience for fans inside stadium venues.

The University of Houston opened conference play on Saturday by crushing West Virginia in the Cougars’ inaugural Big 12 appearance. With James Madison’s loss to Southern Miss over the weekend, Houston is the only undefeated team left in Division I college basketball.

Houston, which reached the Elite Eight in two of the past three seasons, will take its undefeated record on the road Tuesday against Iowa State. Houston (+1100) is the co-second choice at BetMGM to win the national title, while No.1 Purdue remains the favorite at +800.

The Dolphins limped into the NFL playoffs with three losses in their last five games, including a stinging 21-14 defeat to the Bills on Sunday night. The loss dropped the Dolphins to the No. 6 seed in the AFC, sending Mike McDaniel’s team to Kansas City for the opening week of the playoffs.

Tyreek Hill will return to Arrowhead Stadium for the first time since leaving the Chiefs in 2022. Kansas City is favored by 2.5 at ESPN BET; the total is 43.5 points. Frigid temperatures are expected in Kansas City, providing conditions that may push down the total throughout the week.

The Texans open the weekend slate in Houston, where C.J. Stroud and company will host the Browns. Stroud, the favorite for NFL Rookie of the Year, led the Texans to a clutch win in Week 18 over the Colts. At the start of the season, few expected Stroud or Browns quarterback Joe Flacco to end up as starters in the playoffs. The Browns are 2.5-point favorites at bet365; the total is 44.

Mike McCarthy spent more than a decade as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers, leading them to a Super Bowl title capping the 2010 season. Now the coach of the Dallas Cowboys, McCarthy will face his old team for the first time in the playoffs on Sunday. The Cowboys are 7.5-point home favorites at Caesars Sportsbook; the total is 49.5.

Buffalo opens Sunday’s tripleheader at home against the Steelers. The surging Bills won six of their final seven games to clinch the No. 2 seed in the AFC. Buffalo is a 9.5-point favorite over Pittsburgh at BetRivers. On the futures market, the Bills (+280) are the second choice at FanDuel to win the conference.

Sunday’s final game pits the Lions against the Rams in Detroit. Matthew Stafford will return to the Motor City to face a team that took him with the No. 1 overall selection in the 2009 NFL Draft. Three years ago, the Rams acquired Stafford in a blockbuster trade for Jared Goff and several picks. While Stafford led the Rams to the Super Bowl LVI title, Goff led the NFC in passing yards this year. The Lions are 3-point favorites at PointsBet.
