PointsBet Accidentally Takes In-State College Bets In New York

Someone fumbled the ball last week at PointsBet’s New York platform, as a game between the Syracuse Orange and the Virginia Tech Hokies was mistakenly offered to Empire State sports bettors.

Similar to restrictions in multiple other states, the law in New York forbids betting on in-state college teams.

“Due to a third-party error, markets for the Syracuse vs. Virginia Tech college football game on Thursday, October 26, were available for betting on the PointsBet platform in New York,” read a statement from PointsBet, a Fanatics Experience.

“A small group of customers placed bets on this game and the markets were settled late in the evening on Thursday night. After the game ended, PointsBet self-reported the issue to the New York State Gaming Commission and voided the wagers. If an impermissible bet was placed as part of a parlay, the leg was voided, and the rest of the parlay stood at an adjusted price.”

The Orange were 3-point underdogs and ended up losing 38-10.

PointsBet representatives didn’t realize the error until after settlement, and the New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC) was contacted first thing Friday morning. It appears a third-party operator failed to turn on the switch to prevent New York residents from placing wagers.

PointsBet in New York is still being operated by PointsBet USA until Fanatics fully assumes control, which the NYSGC approved earlier this month. Calls and emails to the NYSGC were unreturned.
